Cuddle Time was the best

We buried our precious Gandalf one year ago today. Rather than a sad post, I'd prefer it be about the joys a bunny brings into your life. He was our first and will be the first of many.

Gandalf could always make me smile. Through deaths in the family, a painful broken foot, anything. All it took was his happy little face.

He taught us that even if we didn't see the tiny hole between the baseboards in the kitchen, he did. It was a great hiding spot for a bunny and only after pulling the stove and dishwasher out did he agree to vacate his little hiding place. It was the next day that we discovered that the dishwasher no longer worked and some wires would need to be soldered.

He taught me that getting ready work work wasn't so bad when there was a bunny around. All my dress pants are hemmed for heels and too long when barefoot and applying makeup. But this was excellent for a bunny to play with and tug on to say "pet me please."

He taught us what crepuscular really meant. The day after we welcomed him into our home he was sitting quietly in the little play area we built for him. "Did we break our bunny?" Daniel asked. Nope, he was just waiting for evening to roll around so he could complete a few zooms, hops and binkies around his new living room.

This is the bunny garden we created this past summer. This morning I left a bouquet of cilantro and carrot sticks. A few weeks ago I saw what I thought were leaves blowing in the wind so I looked out the window. Instead of leaves, what had caught my eye was a cottontail.

We are grateful for every moment we had with him in those seven years. Three apartments, my parent's house, our rent house, and finally our home. He always enjoyed the move and wide open rooms after moving out/before moving in were a favorite. A bit of sad at the end is worth the years of joy we had. A bunny is a wonderful thing.

Howard takes a break...

Howard came to Heartland as a result of a call from a caring person at the OKC animal shelter. He had been found in a box that someone had dumped in a parking lot.

He is probably about two years old and appears to have some balance and/or neurological problems. His hopping and sitting is affected to the point that a senior Heartlander has dubbed him "Mr. Wobbles". He sometimes falls over when he is grooming or sitting up but he either catches himself as the fall begins or he bounces right back up. He is one of the most exuberant beings you could ever hope to meet. He is friendly and...as you can see in the pic above...very trusting and relaxed.

This pic lets you see that he is an extremely handsome fellow and since he hasn't been neutered yet...he has an eye for the ladies and gleefully approaches any and all females he can. When he is running free he will pursue them with amazing energy but his balance difficulties make it virtually impossible that he ever can catch any of the girls...but he keeps on trying.

Howard is gloriously handsome...

He is one of the most energetic buns ever out at Heartland, when he is allowed out for some free-range time he is working at digging, chasing women or just visiting every bunny in the vicinity. It is impossible not to smile when you're around him.


Dig, dig, dig...

Heartland and even the whole planet earth is enriched by Howard being here...he is truly a treasure and a joy. Thank you Howard, for being you!

Days of bunny dreams...

Yesterday (October 30, 2011) was one of those days that bring running, digging and binkys to the dreams of the Heartland rabbits. Clear, dry, crisp air and golden sunshine is almost as good as a carrot cocktail for the furred ones.

One of the great treats of volunteering at Heartland is being able to watch the buns having a good time. Days like these are perfect vehicles for seeing happy rabbits. One of the more fun tasks that have to be done on good outside days is being playground referee and supervisor. For instance, the 'Gang of 4' engineered at least 5 or 6 escape tunnels and each was more carefully planned than the last. Lots of exercise for the buns and rounding up the culprits provided a good workout for the supervisor too.

Home Sweet Home...

Back a few months ago Heartland took in a youngster that had been picked up by a local municipal animal control agency. The baby had been mutilated by some human who had apparently taken a pair of scissors and chopped off the ends of her ears.

She was rather shy at first but has since blossomed into a feisty girl who seems to be enjoying her bunnyhood. She has developed into a phenomenal digger and whenever she gets outside for playtime her energy and persistence at moving dirt is something to behold. She was presented with a small bungalow and after suitable remodeling (she had to ensure there was a backdoor on the thing), she has shown that she loves her cottage.

She seems to be thriving and is obviously a beautiful being.

One of the more unpleasant things associated with rescuing those in need is the multiple instances where you are required to become aware of the dark side of human animals. Who harmed her or why they harmed her or even how they harmed this youngster will probably never be known. What is known is that somewhere there is a human with a large karmic debt weighing on their spirit.

This kiddos mutilated ears are a living advertisement attesting to the callousness of some of our fellow humans.

Her hopping, jumping, digging self is a living advertisement to the resiliency of little ones everywhere. We're glad she is here and safe and growing...and digging. We humans owe her safety and caring and much much more. Heartland can't bring back what she has lost but can give her a place to grow and thrive...and dig...and if she can find a forever family that would even be that much better.

Hi Folks! Its the time of year when Heartland gets lots of calls about baby cottontails. "My dog brought them in" "I mowed over a nest" are two of the most common. How about we take this time to let you know a few things about "helping" wild cottontails.

Momma Cottontails do not stay with their babies. That would be like holding up a big sign to predators saying "free lunch over here" . They come one time, at night, normally close to dawn and feed their kids. If you want to know if a cottie is visiting her nest put a little piece of string or something to mark it with. You can also put a finger on their little belly first thing in the morning..If their tummy is round and warm, they are being fed. I can guarantee you mom is watching and knows you are there.

If you mow over a nest and there are no injuries: cover the nest back up and leave them alone. That is the absolute best way to help the babies.

If you find an injured baby or babies: Handle them with care. Place them in a secure box or pet carrier and keep them in a dark, quiet place until you can get professional help. All states have a wildlife rehab of some sort. They are the people that can best take care of the wildlife. They have the knowledge, staff, experience and facilities to deal with them. In Oklahoma you can contact http://www.wildcareoklahoma.org/, they rehab and release hundreds of cottontails and other native wildlife every year. Dont allow your children to handle them and keep them away from household pets. A little fresh water and grass might be appreciated until you can get them to a refuge but a little baby gets all they need from their mom. (please no lettuce or other domestic bunny treats for cottontail babies)

Cottontails are cute, that is for sure but they are not like domestic rabbits. They dont want to snuggle with us, live in our homes and be our pets. Their wild instincts cry out and often times our idea of "help" does more harm than good. They want to be admired from a safe distance if you please.

Wanting to help wildlife is a good thing for sure. The best thing we can do to help all wildlife is leave them alone unless they are injured or truly abandoned. Treating or raising a wild animal requires a lot of time and a huge amount of knowledge about the particular species you are dealing with. Most of us are just not equipped to do that.

Thank you for wanting to help our wild neighbors.

Murphy's Wheels

Once upon a time, there was a bun named Murphy. Murphy arrived at Heartland from a horrible breeding operation. This handsome bun had probably never been out of his little cage. His first week at Heartland, he and his brothers were allowed a lot of playtime and exercise. One day as Murphy was binkying with joy, he cried out. He had made a wrong move and injured his fragile and delicate spine. Was Murphy's life over? Oh no. Not even close. Murphy spent his days watching the sunrise and watching it set. He waited patiently for Heartland to raise the $300 dollars to buy his wheels. (A special cart for paralyzed buns) The money was raised, it was time to give Murphy his freedom to run but it wasn't meant to be. Murphy went across the bridge unexpectedly and never got the chance to try out his cart.

Enter Roger. A beautiful young man found Roger trying to survive on his own, outdoors and paralyzed. This special young man took Roger in. He did everything he could to make Roger's life better and did. Heartland donated Murphy's wheels to Roger. Roger lived almost 4 years. He went across the bridge on March 14, 2011. I believe Murphy was watching the sunset for Roger's approach.

A Childhood Favorite.

When I was in first grade I remember checking out a particular book from the library several times. As an adult I can certainly see why it won the Caldecott Honor. But as a child, I simply loved the sweet story of a bunny forming a relationship with a cat in his newly adopted home. We don't have cats, but the fact that a story about bringing a new bunny home resonated with me as a child comes as no surprise now. The book is called Marshmallow and was written by Clare Turlay Newberry.

When I first began using chat rooms in the mid 90's, that was my username because I remember loving the book and the bunny. It has stayed with my always.

As an adult I have bought myself a copy of my own and thoroughly enjoyed it still. It ends with a sweet poem I thought you might enjoy.

A bunny's a delightful habit,
No home's complete without a rabbit.
Brighten our home with a bunny,
He's fat, he's frisky, he's funny.
He's soft, he's downy,
He's cute, he's clown-y,
Oh, brighten your home with a bunny!

I highly recommend a copy for yourself.

Heartland bunnies featured in news story....

This morning, Wednesday - 3/23/2011, a reporter and cameraman from Channel 4 News here in the Oklahoma City area came out and shot some footage at Heartland...several volunteers are shown along with some of the exquisite Heartland bunnies. The coverage offered the opportunity to do a little advocating on behalf of all bunnies and to educate the public about bunnies as companions.

This is an important time of year to get the message out about adopting instead of buying bunnies (or other companion animals) because of the Easter holiday and the images of the Easter bunny and all such imagery.

It is not unusual for someone to purchase a baby bunny for a child (as an Easter present) then a short time later (especially when the hormones kick in) start trying to get someone to take the bunny off of their hands. These hopefully good intentioned purchases are often made in ignorance. Companion animals aren't toys, they are a big responsibility and require an enduring commitment. Getting the message out about the nature of bunnies and their needs is one way to try to derail impulsive and misguided behavior.

The news coverage did not tell the public the important information that bunnies or any other companion animal should never be purchased, rather always, if a companion animal is desired, they should be adopted from a shelter or rescue organization or facility. There are too many homeless animals facing possible death or having to live in a shelter without a family of their own...adopt, never buy.

A great big thanks to Jeanne and Brad Patterson for making Heartland Rabbit Rescue possible and more big thanks to the numerous volunteers who arranged the media coverage and pitched in to make this visit from the news folks go well. It is a great benefit to have such support.

Valentines, Year of the Rabbit, Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month

While you may be tempted to celebrate their special month or year by getting a rabbit just remember that a bunny is a commitment, not a live toy to be discarded when you lose interest. Spice, Zoe, and Gwendolyn would like to take this time to remind you not to purchase a rabbit on impulse. Bringing a bunny into your home is a big decision. Your bunny should be spayed or neutered, live indoors with you and your family, can be trained to use a litter box, needs love, exercise, daily interaction and a healthy diet. The worst life a rabbit can have is one where he or she is ignored.

Heartland bunnies are spayed and neutered, live indoors, are under no circumstances allowed to breed and we do not adopt baby rabbits, EVER.

We wish that your Year of the Rabbit be prosperous and if you do decide to adopt a bunny, do your research and please adopt from a rescue. Hope you have a very Hoppy and love filled Valentines Day.

You would think it impossible for a bunny to get their head between the wire elements in this type of fencing/enclosure, wouldn't you? The two vertical wires that are on the extreme right once had the same spacing as those on the left....yesterday morning when I came into the main warren at Heartland Rabbit Rescue I found that Chanel (see pic below) had somehow managed to wedge her head through the two extreme right vertical wires and was trapped.

She was sitting quietly and after some grunting and effort on my part I was able to bend the elements far enough apart to allow her to escape....they were not bent when I arrived...the bending is the result of my efforts. I have no idea how she accomplished the unlikely....but now known to be possible....feat of getting her head between the wires.

Chanel appears to be leery after self-trapping experiment.

She was a little wobbly immediately after her release but fairly quickly started nibbling some hay and roaming around the warren....apparently with no persistent injuries. Chanel provided me with my fright quota for the next two months.

This type of enclosure has been used for many many months for another resident of the warren with no hint of problems or issues. It may be that some of you use this sort of fencing....I am writing just to make you aware that at least one (Chanel is not an especially small or dwarf bunny) lagomorph managed to get her head through the vertical wires.

Chanel also wants to thank Joey for his Holiday greetings and to extend wishes for Happy (and safe) Holidays to everyone.

It was supposed to rain Thursday.....

...so there was reluctance to get many of the bunnies outside at the same time. Rachel, Frank, Larry and Nester were placed out in the runs and each given the full length of the enclosure in which to run, dig, jump, play or lallygag. After a time the deep percussive sound of several helicopters was heard off in the distance and Jeanne took Nester and Rachel inside to reduce their fright. Frank and Larry were still out.....when from the west.....4 dual engined helicopters approached, flying fairly low. The sound was sort of spooky and Larry responded by going on heightened alert, running a little way then freezing and watching.

Frank, on the other hand responded by exhibiting a previously un-witnessed bunny move. The best example of a similar movement is that of a cat. If you have ever seen a cat go on alert when they see a squirrel or bird and they think they can maybe capture them then they will couch low and slink (the best word) forward......moving totally low to the ground and looking almost like they are on wheels, no up and down movement at all, just this smooth gliding progress.

Frank.....who is quite stand-offish and protesting strongly if you try to approach him......slinks just like a cat from the far end of his run over to the corner where I was standing and crouches there. It was astonishing both to see him move like that and to see him come toward a human because he apparently thought a human presence offered some safety from whatever it was that approached.

Frank is probably the bunny most adverse to human contact at the shelter (he and Magic)....yet....when scary stuff approached Frank jettisoned his anti-human stance and came right over. Interesting and suggestive that he holds more than one attitude about humans.

Apparently he decided better the human you know rather than the unknown scary thing....but....for him to see a human as a source of protection of some kind.....what a hoot. He continued slinking for a bit after the helicopters were gone, long enough that Jeanne had returned and was able to see this really unusual way of moving.

This picture of Frank was taken before all the helicopter fuss. He decided a cinder block offered a place to hide but when the helicopters approached he abandoned that meager shelter quickly.

Today was also interesting in that Marshall the mighty was given a shot a free-roaming (with an escort of course). The world had been wanting to see what he would do when he got the chance to be on his own in terms of where he went.

It was well worth the wait. Marshall is fast, make no mistake, he can haul bunny fur like lightning. And Marshall can dance, he is as light on his feet as he is fast. It could be easily seen that....once he oriented himself and realized that he was captain of his own ship....he was ecstatic. If you squinted your eyes and looked at him just the right way.....he was 10 feet tall and full of might.

Majestic would not be too strong a word to describe his appearance.

It was quite a sight, these bunny folk give gifts again and again to those who are lucky enough to spend time with them.

Thank you Marshall (and Frank).

After his free-roam romp time, Marshall....who can be mister attitude....allowed himself to be picked right up with no running away, protesting or struggling and taken back to his living area.

These would be appropriate for a coffee mug. If you disturb a bunny's midday nap like a did a few minutes ago you will encounter grumpy mugs like some of these. Mind you this is risky business what I did. Some of us wear scars thanks to one of these dudes. And they all have attitude - well that's kind of obvious. But I couldn't believe what some of them in the warren have told the volunteers their names are: Fast Eddie, Lefty, Big Al. I am shocked at the behavior in there.

The Unexpected

Our paths often cross with those of the wildlife out here, most frequently the cottontails. We have learned to watch out for the wildlife and consider them whenever we are working on the property. If Brad is mowing he is always to watching the ground (no daydreaming on the riding lawnmower). The pre-mowing preparations of the bunny yard take time and effort and we carefully inspect the 80' x 120' perimeter of the bunny yard looking for nests, taking extra care around the high places. We have noticed that momma cottontails seem to choose high ground. What I found this morning really surprised me and I thought I would share the pictures I took. Please note in the picture the items that Brad placed back along the fence after he mowed Sunday. I picked up the quilt that is laying on the ground with the intentions of putting it in the wash. I changed my mind when I saw what was under it. There were baby cottontails there - newborns. Momma hadn't dug a hole, no doubt because the ground is so parched it is too hard to dig. But she pulled a great deal of her hair for the nest and then pulled the quilt over it. We will be able to tell who momma is. She will be the one with large bald spots. I took a few pictures of the babies and placed the quilt back. The conditions are harsh out in the plains but momma is a resourceful one. I am already fretting about all the things that might happen to the babies but I must not move them. Even though they are so vulnerable where they are they have a better chance than they wouldwith human intervention. The wildlife experts tell us even they have a low success rate with the baby cottontails and they have the milk that is formulated especially for cottontails. Please check the House Rabbit Society's website http://www.rabbit.org/. concerning what to do if you encounter baby cottontails. Everyone please say prayers for the three babies under the quilt. The new momma could use a little help in the next 3 weeks.

Russell is chillaxin indoors where buns belong in this heat. Course, all of the buns at Heartland live in heated/cooled warrens. This is the time of year when most backyard buns are lost. If you wanna see what it's like, put on a parka, go sit in the shade when its 100 degrees and clutch a frozen water bottle. I bet you wont last long....Neither will your furry/hairy kids. Bring them inside. You can play fun games with them like:

Can I tweak the bunny's tail before he jumps up?

How long and wide is the bun?

How many doots are in the jar? (Pick a number between 10 and a million)

Not surprisingly one of the most frequently asked questions from children are about bunny ears. They are truly a fascinating bunny part and invaluable tool for survival. How is it that they work independently of each other like they do - one pointing forward and the other to the back? Or when the bunny is really angry both ears are pinned flat against the bunny's back. Subtle messages are transmitted via the ears continually if the bunny is awake. How appropriate the term given to a TV antenna - rabbit ears. Well some of you will know what I'm talking about.

Some friends of ours are on a business trip and their 2 bunnies are staying with us while they are gone. Walter, the white with brown spots bunny man and Barbara Jane, the red head beauty both have magnificent ears, but B.J. has especially gorgeous ears. They are in my opinion perfection. Just wanted to point them out. Bunny eyelashes are another favorite for another day.

That's not a bunny!

Meet Miss Margie, no Heartland is not going into the dog rescue business, well mostly anyway. This is the beautiful Margie. She showed up in the pasture about 3 weeks ago. She was huddled down, cold, hungry and scared. Heartland took her in and just look at her now!

Margie appears to be part Beagle and some other kinds of dogs thrown in. She is about a year old and has now been spayed and gotten her shots. She is a very sweet girl who loves company. Margie is learning her manners and how to walk on a leash. She needs a wonderful indoor home and to be treated with kindness and love and have lots of playtime. What a great girl she is!

I'm sure this was supposed to be used to keep bunnies out...but of course, that's the last thing we want!

Hello fellow bunny lovers. I'm not sure how widely known this is right now but there has been a recall of romaine lettuce, some of which came out of Vaughn Foods in Moore. So far it sounds like a narrow recall but just to be cautious, I think I will go with red leaf or other lettuce for now. Details are available in this CNN article. What's in a name? A lot actually. Naming a bunny usually takes time,....that is if you are trying to get the bunny to respond favorably to it. Sometimes we get it right the first time and the bunny struts around the room with his, or her chin stuck out as if to say, "Yep! that's me alright!" But most often we go through a long list of possibilities and morphs thereof. It can be a complicated process.

The bunny pictured below is Chip. His markings resemble 'wings'(in my opinion anyway), as in wings of a jet. In the beginning I briefly referred to him as the 'Wing Man' but got the reaction you see here. I soon got the impression that he just liked to be called Chip. We tried it on him and he liked it.

I am very curious about the processes you went through when naming your bunnies. Do any of you have stories you'd like to share?

Bogart has it, & i've seen at least one other with this condition. I'd like to know if there are more out there. I call it D.B.S.S., for "Dead Bunny Sleeping Syndrome". It's when your bunny sleeps in such ridiculous contorted positions that either 1) he looks like road kill, or 2) like he's already departed for the great beyond, and rigor mortis has set in. No matter how many times he's done it, it each time I want to check his pulse to make sure he's still alive. See below:

When I do poke him, he jerks awake & looks annoyed, as if to say, "what did you wake me up for"? Grouchy old men don't like being awoke from their naps!

Sorry, Bogart. You fooled me again. Sometimes, seeing him breathe is about the only way I can tell he's still alive! :)

Hurt

That's how we described her when she first arrived at Heartland. She seemed to have given up. There was nothing wrong with her little body, her spirit was damaged. She would face the wall. She didn't react to hands or treats, resigned to her fate. At least that's what she thought.

She is learning to explore now. Enjoying new freedoms, playing, finding out that hands don't always hurt, sometimes they can be kind and treats can be good fun.

Her name is AMARA. It means courage and strong in African. Eternal and unfading in Greek. Everlasting and beloved in Latin. She is all those things.

His name is JIMMIE and he thinks Amara is beautiful.

They met in a basket on Valentine's Day. Jimmie liked her right away. Amara is playing hard to get. She keeps trying to tell Jimmie that SHE will be in charge. He is okay with that. Jimmie is a very laid back bun whose feelings are easily hurt. Be kind to him Amara and he will love you forever.

He is already watching out for you.

Elephant Rescue Video

Okay, I know this is a little off topic, but I thought it might be interesting to look at the work some other animal rescue groups are doing. In Thailand there is an elephant trade, & they are used for labor, transportation, tourism, etc. Elephants sometimes escape or are turned out by their owners, so they actually have a stray elephant problem in Bangkok. Can you imagine?

This is a 6-minute video about the Elephant Nature Park rescuing Bua Loi (her name means "floating lotus"), a 30-year old female elephant with a handicap. First they have to pay $13,000 to buy her from the owner, & then truck her 20 hours to the park. But once there she is reunited with an old elephant friend, is accepted by a group & then becomes an auntie to an elephant baby. It's really a wonderful ending. So, i'm not sure which is better, rescuing bunnies or rescuing elephants. Elephants don't need their litter boxes scooped, & don't multiply as quickly. But they can eat more than 300 pounds of food a day, trample down trees & fences, and live up to 60 years!

Can you imagine a bunny with that kind of power? :)

This is our darling girl Miss Millie. She is the first bunny at Heartland that bit me and on my first day there as a volunteer! I love this girl. She has been the apple of my eye every since. She puts on quite a show of being a "tough girl". She is really just a big snuggly bun.

I hate the expression "aggressive rabbit". It does such a disservice to bunnies. A bunny will bite out of fear and defense not because they are aggressive. I prefer to think of them as assertive. Lets take Miss Millie for example, when she was rescued by Heartland, she was found in a cardboard box, in an ice storm, in a parking lot, with a severely broken leg. The parking lot where she was found was suspiciously close to a daycare............live toy for the kids at the daycare perhaps? Maybe an accident with an unsupervised child? Who knows.

It took a long time and many vet visits to repair Millie's leg. What took much longer was repairing this bunny's spirit and trust. A loving hand turns her quickly into a big ole baby. She knows that she doesn't always have to be on the defense and that the hands that reach for her will be kind or full of treats. She is my special girl.

Bunnies will bite sometimes. You have a bunny that is not spayed or neutered and they are carrying a heavy load of hormones with no outlet to relieve them, yes, they might be "assertive". A bunny that has been handled rough or mistreated may bite out of desperation. What other defense do they have? Bunnies that are never let out of a cage will often bite. Imagine you are stuck in your house all the time, nobody talks to you, you never get to stretch your legs, you never get a hug or are shown love from another creature, maybe you don't get to eat on a regular basis. All of a sudden the roof lifts off your house and a giant hand reaches in to grab you. You might bite too.

There is a lot more work to be done in regards to educating the public about having a bunny as part of your family. It has gotten better but Millie is a prime example of how things can go horribly wrong and a wonderful example of what a little love and tenderness can do.

Now that winter and daylight savings time is almost upon us, are you looking for a cozy winter project? If so, I'm seeking quilters or sewers to help make a quilt. I think this "Grandma's Bunnies" pattern would make a great raffle quilt raffle for Heartland. I've already got the pattern & the fabric to make it, but am lacking in time to do it all myself. And anyways, i'm sure a quilt we made together would be way cooler than a solo project. You can see some examples of a finished quilt with this pattern here and here.

Today I discovered what is either a nest of caterpillar larvae or some kind of insect. Either way I was completely surprised to find the entire container filled with these creatures. I bought this garden bowl at Petsmart about a month ago and have been feeding a little to Patch and Alice each night. Joey has come along way from the bunny that left Heartland in May 2008 with a really big chip on his shoulder about having to leave Momma Jeannie. He FINALLY got over it last April and decided he could like me after all.

He likes to run around outside.

But likes lounging on the couch the most!

and you can do almost anything you want.....but, JUST DON'T DANCE!" I went to the warrens to do some work, put a CD on for some motivation and started down the middle aisle between the playpens when a certain song came on titled "Stomp". It brought back fond memories of party times long,long ago. All I was doing was a little hip swinging and a few funky steps when suddenly I heard a commotion just to my left, which erupted in a millisecond into a tsunami of full blown panic. The bonded pair of New Zealands to my immediate left had freaked at the sight of my dance,which alerted their neighbors,which alerted their neighbors, and so on. The rippling effect was astonishing. Bunnies were dashing around their playpens saying, "WHAT IS IT?! WHAT IS IT?!!!" One of them nearly jumped completely over the side. I knew just to back up slowly and be very still until this panic subsided. When it did I was relieved to see no one was hurt. However, many were now in freeze frame. Some were still huddled together for safety, some were clutching the side of the playpen, some were hiding behind anything they could find (it is SO cute when they hide their face and their butt sticks out a mile), and practically everyone was wearing the contents of their potty boxes. One playpen was knocked completely apart and I've got some repair work to do. Lots of sweeping to do and broken pieces of a food dish to find. I've got to remember these guys are prey and their instincts keep them on the alert for any threat. I am not allowed to dance in the warren any more,....ever.

My little Nemo loves his mom's purse. Anytime he finds it on the floor he cant resist. He once had an unfortunate incident while purse snooping, my cell phone rang! He ran faster than I have ever seen and stayed under the bed for hours. It didn't deter him however, he still loves to snoop.

Tribute to a Staircase

This was our last afternoon in the other house. The five of us lived here quite happily for a year and a half. It took us some to discover this wonderful thing right under our noses. But once we did, we had a blast!

Sometimes mom had to tell us to slow down on the stairs. We just got so excited that we tried to take two at once and didn’t always make it. Even though mom and dad laughed at us they also told us to slow down and not hurt ourselves. But it’s so much fun!

We have moved to the new house and mom and dad promised that we wouldn’t have to move again after this. This house has stairs too but mom and dad won’t let us have run of the house since there are cardboard boxes everywhere. We’re negotiating our release into the house at large. After all, if we’re not moving again they don’t need those boxes anymore do they?

Our dear little Raphael left for the bridge a week ago. He came to Heartland in March 05 as a little baby bun. He was part of a roundup that came out of Texas. He was very carelessly separated from his mother too early by inexperienced or uncaring people before he got to Heartland.

Raphael was a quiet and unassuming bun. One of those black bunnies that doesn't capture attention. Well you captured mine Raphael. I remember seeing you a week before you left for the bridge. You were dashing around your playpen with excitement when I gave you a little oatmeal. You were busy chatting it up with your neighbor Murray. Talking about "big" things I imagine.

I will miss you Raphael and think of you often. Black bunnies hold a special place in my heart. Godspeed on your journey to the bridge baby.

I had just returned from the vet with one of our bunnies, Ashley, and my husband met me at the van so he could carry her into the house for me. As he picked up Ashley he said, "did you see the cottontail over there?" motioning over his shoulder. "What?"i said in puzzlement. We have a lot of cottontails out here and seeing them is the norm. When I came around to the other side of the van I saw why he pointed this one out to me. We have had an especially severe summer and the herbs have succumbed to the heat one by one. I had only one oregano plant left and I placed a white plastic table over it to shield it from the sun. Much to my delight the bronze fennel I had lost a couple of weeks ago magically reappeared after the cool front came in the other day. It was so very tiny, maybe 1/2 inch tall. I placed a little red step stool over it and watered it lovingly, like I have the oregano. Oh well. I gladly offer up the shade to the little cottontail. He's very clever to find a shady cool spot like that. Who knows, the fennel might make another comeback.

I've had the music from Fiddler on the Roof on my brain all day. Marisella and Rufus' adoption arrangements have been made and I will be delivering them to their new home next week. We are so happy for them, and for the lovely couple who is adopting them. But we are a little sad, as we always are, to see the bunnies go. Have a wonderful life Rufus and Marisella! We will take good care of your kids.

There have been a rash of phone calls of late regarding cottontail babies. Some well meaning people and some not so well meaning but either way lets try and clear up a few things. Cottontails are not like domestic bunnies. They are not our toys nor do we have the right to take them from the nest and try to make them into pets.

Do not assume a cottontail has been abandoned. Momma cottontails do not stay with their babies. Not because they are bad moms but because they are trying to keep from drawing predators to their babies.

Cottontail mothers come and feed their babies in the dark, usually the early hours before dawn. If you want to know if a mom is visiting a nest put something very small on the nest. Maybe a little piece of string or some little twigs. Check to see if it has been disturbed, later in the day. Dont assume because you don't see her, she isn't taking care of her babies.

If you do come accross a baby that needs help or perhaps your dog or cat brings one in, you need to take the bunny to a wildlife rehabilitator. They need special milk that the average person does not have access to. If you try and raise that baby yourself you will more than likely lose them. The mortality rate for cottontails raised by humans is 90%.

Cottontails are extremely sensitive and easily frightened. if you do find a baby whose has been injured or whose mother has been killed and the babies are still in the nest. Put that baby in a box with a snug lid and plenty of air to breathe. Put them in a quiet place in your home where they wont be disturbed by your pets. Do not handle them beyond what is absolutely necessary and do not let your children handle or play with them. If you will notice in the picture above the "scary eyes". Bunnies will remain frozen with fear and can have a heart attack. Of course there are some circumstances when the cottontails require our assistance. Do what instructed above and get them to a wildlife rehabilitator ASAP!

Use some common sense folks. Interfering with wildlife is often more for our benefit than the animals. If you want to help find your local wildlife rehab and contact them. They are the professionals and will know what to do.

Silent trip to the bridge

This was our darling little Wyatt. A most unusual looking bunny. A white lionhead with crystal blue eyes. A very quiet and shy buns Wyatt was dumped at the animal shelter. Perhaps because he was shy, maybe because he had molar problems that required regular trips to the vet or maybe because someone decided to abuse him for breeding purposes and he was not found useful. We did not think Wyatt was able to hear. Possibly that recessive gene that seems to go along with blue-eye animals. He was not up on the website for adoption. We were afraid that someone would take a shine to Wyatt's coloring and try to use him for more breeding or sell him to the highest bidder.

Wyatt left for the bridge sometime in the early hours this past Saturday morning. This sweet little bunny man lived a quiet life next door to his friend Shoebox. He really only made 3 friends at the rescue; His gentle neighbor Shoebox who sat and watched him closely as he passed, one of our young volunteers who had numerous conversations with Wyatt and his sponsor Rick who got the opportunity to snuggle with Wyatt. You may wonder why I am intent on telling the circumstances on how a bunny that has gone to the bridge came to Heartland? My wish is to help educate and hopefully make people think before they discard a bunny. When you bring any animal into your home, you make a promise to that animal. It is supposed to be for better or worse to take care of them. Momma Jeannie kept that promise to Wyatt when others failed him.

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature -- trees, flowers, grass -- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence. We need silence to be able to touch souls.

Darcy Update

Hi all!

Thanks so much for all the well-wishes for Darcy. She is doing much better! After talking to the vets, since Gabriel never got sick (meaning it wasn't the food) we think the problem is arthritis in her back and hips. It seems that she's been hiding the pain for a while, and eventually just started to shut down from it (as bunnies tend to do). Looking back, I can think of things that seemed relatively normal or unimportant at the time, but may have been indications of a problem. We've got her on pain meds, and the vet says that keeping her on them indefinitely is not a problem. She's still got some diarrhea every now and then, and will never really be "well," but for the most part is doing great! She and Gabriel have been playing more in the past couple of days than they have in a long time. It's so good to have my bunnygirl back!
