Profound and Eloquent

We have two brand new volunteers out here, Juli and Glenn. yeay! Glenn shared his favorite animal quote that I want to share with you: "The animal shall not be measured by man. In a world order and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth." The author is Henry Beston,a writer/naturalist. The quote is from one of his works "The Outermost House", written in the 1920s.

That is a great quotation, I love it... What is the animal in the first picture? Is it a cottontail? I can't quite tell. I also LOVE the picture of the bun with the toads. That is so funny!! We've had toads find their way into our bunny playpen too, & the buns are always completely uninterested in them.

Hi Layla! Yes,'tis a cottontail. Clicking on the picture gives you a closeup. We call her Momma C, someone who was always around and not threatened by our presence. Her descendants are much like her- calm and curious about us and what we do. She was molting in those two pictures. As you can see she strolled right by me on the path and seemed to be saying, "pardon me...coming through." The cottontail pictures are probably 2 or 3 years old. The picture with the over-fed toads was taken about 3 years. The bunny is Gizmo, of Einstein and Gizmo, two elderly brothers. They have since gone on across the bridge. Both brothers liked that spot where Gizmo is sitting and often sat there. Because of the sensor light over the door (we now keep it turned off) any movement at all caused the light to come on and the june bugs flock to the light, which is why the june bugs are scattered about the toads, and the reason that the toad's bellies are so round. Just like you noticed with your bunnies, the buns are uninterested in the toads. It was very comical to watch the two brothers endure the inevitable dive bombing and resulting buzzing and spinning of those ridiculous bugs. I think Megan posted these pictures on the blog once before, but its been a while. When I read the quote Glenn sent I thought of these pictures.
