A DAY AT HEARTLAND

This evening when I came home after spending an afternoon at Heartland (my very first visit and day as a volunteer, I pretty much did nothing today but meet each bunny and hand out carrots) I had to sit down and tell my bunnies all about it. I will let Mojo tell the rest of the story, she is better at telling mushy stuff than I am at saying it. Tango will preside to make sure it gets told right.

So mom came home this afternoon smelling like bunnies. I think she is cheating on us so I had to sniff her all over and look hard into her face. I showed some disapproval but I will let her scratch my head later I think.

Mom told us all about the buns at Heartland. She said she was so lucky that we picked her to live with cuz there are a lot of buns at Heartland that people should adopt. Big buns, little buns, feisty buns (mom loves the feisty ones), scardy buns and sick bunnies. They left big impressions on her heart. She was proud to meet Mr. Cooper and hope his eyes get to feeling better soon. Sprout was a cutie for sure and a champion despite his head tilt. Ben had a huge impact on mom and she will think of him every day. His little face struggling to breathe and eat the same time made mom cry on the way home.(She said he is her special bunny now and will be her sponsor bun along with Cooper) Hannah did as well. She said little angel Amelia was a snuggler deluxe and Huggie was a real crack up. (There might be a bunny in there somewhere under that fluff). Daisy sticks out in her mind as well. Something about that little sweet baby putting her face to the cage for a kiss. Momma said she smooched lots of them through the cages (she didnt want to be too forward on her first day and start grabbing up bunnies) she was passing out smooches left and right. Not too sure I like THAT very much.
She told us she really wanted to kiss and snuggle with Sweet Pea, who has hard time with people cuz she was mistreated. Who mistreats bunnies anyway? Missy gave big attitude but Mom snuck in a smooch anyway and Millie and Tavey cracked her up with their carrot excitement. Bunny Cole looks just like me. That's pretty cool, and Stewart gobbled up his shredded carrots with gusto. Had a little orange stain on his face.
Momma is going to start bugging her friends to give more to the bunnies. Times might be tough but there is always a little extra to share. She says maybe that rotten brat bunny Nemo upstairs will get a girl. (maybe Huggie or Amelia buns) but knowing Nemo he will pick the biggest bunny with the biggest attitude.
She also got to meet the guard donkeys. She liked that too. She said they could crunch a carrot in no time flat. I doubt they could beat me though. Momma is always telling us what wonderful people are there and how they love bunnies. I hope everyone will care about bunnies one day as much as they do.
Here's to Hazel, Barty and Hogan who left for the bridge before Mom could meet them. May they find peace and happiness forever.

Love Letters

Dear Momma,
Please dont ever stop loving me!!!! I know I am aloof and hide from you a lot. I cant help myself. It's hard for me to trust humans. I cant explain to you in words why I act the way I do and why I only show affection to my girls but I DO love you momma!!! I just cant really show you how. Dont ever send me away like the first human that had me. I get to snuggle with my ladies and always have plenty of nice things to eat. My house is big and I get to come out often. You never yell at me when I nibble on your books and you dont pick me up. Can I trust you to keep me around even if I am not friendly and seldom binky? I want to stay here with Mojo and Tango forever. Please!
Love,
Dudley

My dearest Dudley buns,
Momma would NEVER send you away because you arent as outgoing as the others. The person who said that to momma was an idiot. You must never ever worry that momma doesnt understand why you are the way you are. Momma knows that bunnies can have a really hard time in life. They are misunderstood and need a lot of patience and respect. I know you dont trust humans and I dont blame you. You were born and raised in chaos and noise with lots of scary things happening around you all the time. I want you to have a happy and secure life with your girls and only binky when you feel like it. Momma will never yell at you, hit you or make you afraid of her hands. You have no idea how much I love you. You can hide all you want and nibble all the books momma has. Not all bunnies are the same but all of them are special and you are too. Stop worrying so much. You are here to stay!
Love,
Momma

You tawkin to me?

Tango causes a lot of fear and trauma when I take her to the vet. Everyone is very alarmed by her. Anyway, today was nail trim day for Tango and Nemo. The puppy spa is about a 1/2 a block from my house. I tucked Nemo in my hoodie and zipped up and off we went. Easy, Easy done in five minutes and back home. The lady that usually does it was outand her husband was there. I told him I was going home to get my big girl and that she was a handful. He said "no problem, I have trimmed a raccoon's nail so a little bunny wont be a problem" I told him I just wanted to warn him but he didn't listen. So I go home and get Miss Tango and put her in the carrier. (she wouldnt fit in my hoodie and would whip my butt if I tried) When we walk in I told him we needed to go into a room and that I needed her carrier to be on a table when I took her out. He seemed skeptical still. Poor man. I reach in to get her out and she does her usual growling and thumping the back of the carrier with all her might. His eyes got big as saucers."Is she growling"? "I have never heard a rabbit growl before" So I get her out and he says "holy crap". I tried to tell him!!!!!!! Every time he trimmed a toenail she grunted and tried to bite him. I honestly thought he was going to cry. It was over pretty fast. He didn't charge for it because her back feet didn't need trimming and I am fairly sure he just wanted her out. He said as I was leaving " Do you have anymore like her at home"? I laughed and said yes but I wasn't bringing Mojo in because she didn't need a trim. (Mojo is big but NOTHING like Tango but I wanted him to worry a bit.) Next time I think I will bring them both at the same time and see how he reacts. Cant help myself. It was so much fun. Tango doesn't scare me at all but she sure scares the heck out of everyone else. Raccoon Smaccoon. Just had to share that story with you all.

Christina

P.S. Sorry how this is split up. I couldnt get it fixed properly.

Angels among us.

In response to the post below I just have to say a few words.

I am not a religious person by any means. With that being said, I think there are angels among us. One is an animal control officer named Shelley who must have a horrible job sometimes but cared about a little bunny so much. The other ones I know are the people at Heartland. I knew zero about the plight of bunnies a year ago. After I got my first 2 I started researching the net like crazy trying to find the best ways to take care of them. I discovered Heartland Rabbit Rescue. They were so kind and informative and answered every single one of my questions and went out of their way for me numerous times even when I must have been a pain. I just wanted to try and do everything right and they were wonderful. There is such a need for those people in the world who care about the little animals, children and the elderly and ill. So on behalf of Mojo and Tango ( who I found out later were actually intended to be meat rabbits) and Dudley the most scardy little bunny in the universe and Nemo whose head is slightly tilted but whose heart is like a lion. THANK YOU HEARTLAND FOR BEING THE ANGELS AMONG US.

Sssssshhhhhh!

"We gotta whisper Tango or Dudley will hear us".

" I know Mojo, he is such a child". "Just because we ate all the banana".

" Ha, little do those rotten girls know". "Momma always gives me my own banana!" "Girls are SUCH a pain".
