A DAY AT HEARTLAND

This evening when I came home after spending an afternoon at Heartland (my very first visit and day as a volunteer, I pretty much did nothing today but meet each bunny and hand out carrots) I had to sit down and tell my bunnies all about it. I will let Mojo tell the rest of the story, she is better at telling mushy stuff than I am at saying it. Tango will preside to make sure it gets told right.

So mom came home this afternoon smelling like bunnies. I think she is cheating on us so I had to sniff her all over and look hard into her face. I showed some disapproval but I will let her scratch my head later I think.

Mom told us all about the buns at Heartland. She said she was so lucky that we picked her to live with cuz there are a lot of buns at Heartland that people should adopt. Big buns, little buns, feisty buns (mom loves the feisty ones), scardy buns and sick bunnies. They left big impressions on her heart. She was proud to meet Mr. Cooper and hope his eyes get to feeling better soon. Sprout was a cutie for sure and a champion despite his head tilt. Ben had a huge impact on mom and she will think of him every day. His little face struggling to breathe and eat the same time made mom cry on the way home.(She said he is her special bunny now and will be her sponsor bun along with Cooper) Hannah did as well. She said little angel Amelia was a snuggler deluxe and Huggie was a real crack up. (There might be a bunny in there somewhere under that fluff). Daisy sticks out in her mind as well. Something about that little sweet baby putting her face to the cage for a kiss. Momma said she smooched lots of them through the cages (she didnt want to be too forward on her first day and start grabbing up bunnies) she was passing out smooches left and right. Not too sure I like THAT very much.
She told us she really wanted to kiss and snuggle with Sweet Pea, who has hard time with people cuz she was mistreated. Who mistreats bunnies anyway? Missy gave big attitude but Mom snuck in a smooch anyway and Millie and Tavey cracked her up with their carrot excitement. Bunny Cole looks just like me. That's pretty cool, and Stewart gobbled up his shredded carrots with gusto. Had a little orange stain on his face.
Momma is going to start bugging her friends to give more to the bunnies. Times might be tough but there is always a little extra to share. She says maybe that rotten brat bunny Nemo upstairs will get a girl. (maybe Huggie or Amelia buns) but knowing Nemo he will pick the biggest bunny with the biggest attitude.
She also got to meet the guard donkeys. She liked that too. She said they could crunch a carrot in no time flat. I doubt they could beat me though. Momma is always telling us what wonderful people are there and how they love bunnies. I hope everyone will care about bunnies one day as much as they do.
Here's to Hazel, Barty and Hogan who left for the bridge before Mom could meet them. May they find peace and happiness forever.

Link to Leith Petwerks Inc. to help Heartland rabbits!

In 2008, Leith Petwerks Inc. has an exciting grant program designed to help organizations that educate the public, rescue, foster and find homes for rabbits! The method for choosing a $500 Grant Winner varies each quarter.

The third quarter installment is the simplest yet! Take just a moment to help out Heartland Rabbit Rescue!

  1. On your web page (personal, organizational or commercial) place a link to Leith Petwerks at http://www.leithpetwerks.com/. Something like:

Visit Leith Petwerks Inc! They are great bunny people, and are makers of the awesome Bunny Abode House Rabbit Condo!

The text must be meaningful and honest!

  2. Let them know about that link by completing the form on their webpage: http://www.leithpetwerks.com/grant/
That's it! After September 30th, 2008 they will select one of the registered links AT RANDOM. If that link is on an organization's page, that organization wins the $500cash grant. If it's on a personal web page or commercial entity's web page, then the owner of that page who submitted the link gets to choose what non-profit rabbit rescue (Heartland Rabbit Rescue!) receives the $500 grant!

Create your link now and tell your friends!

Thanks for helping the rescue rabbits!

Angels among us.

In response to the post below I just have to say a few words.

I am not a religious person by any means. With that being said, I think there are angels among us. One is an animal control officer named Shelley who must have a horrible job sometimes but cared about a little bunny so much. The other ones I know are the people at Heartland. I knew zero about the plight of bunnies a year ago. After I got my first 2 I started researching the net like crazy trying to find the best ways to take care of them. I discovered Heartland Rabbit Rescue. They were so kind and informative and answered every single one of my questions and went out of their way for me numerous times even when I must have been a pain. I just wanted to try and do everything right and they were wonderful. There is such a need for those people in the world who care about the little animals, children and the elderly and ill. So on behalf of Mojo and Tango ( who I found out later were actually intended to be meat rabbits) and Dudley the most scardy little bunny in the universe and Nemo whose head is slightly tilted but whose heart is like a lion. THANK YOU HEARTLAND FOR BEING THE ANGELS AMONG US.

A Very Special Friend

I met Cadbury's special friend, Shelley, this last February. She called us hoping she could get help for a little white rabbit she had picked up as a stray a month earlier. Shelley is the animal control officer for a small town in northeastern Oklahoma. She explained his story, that she had tried for a month to adopt him out, but no one was interested him - at least not as a pet. Most small towns, having very small budgets, will hold a stray for 72 hours only. A rare few will hold them a week. I don't know how much time Cadbury's town allows (I didn't ask), but Shelley had already broken the rules in holding him for a month. Her voice sort of trailed off as she asked if we possibly had room for him. I sighed and she added quickly, "He is very sweet." As I pictured in my mind that corner of the warren that has - had our one remaining 'emergency' cage I heard myself say, "How shall we get him here?" We made plans to meet half way on the turnpike - an hour and a half drive for each of us. She had left early in the morning and was waiting for me as I pulled up to the rest stop. Taking him out of her carrier and putting him into mine was done in my van. We talked for a little while about Cadbury and how she came about giving him that name, all the while she was stroking his forehead. He had his eyes closed and his nose pointing up to her. It was obvious they had shared moments like this before. She smiled and said, "Have a good life Cadbury" and thanked me again as she got out of the van. She handed me gas money for which I tried to refuse. But she said, "Please take it, I want to help." I told her she already has helped. Her act of kindness towards a little white rabbit that nobody wanted comes to my mind often. "Thank you officer Shelley." Here are a couple of pictures of Cadbury being a goofus I took in the play yard Sunday. He is neutered and ready for that special family to love him. Thanks to his very special friend Shelley.

There's a Party Over Here ...

... yes, a huge veggie party was going on at Heartland last Sunday, generously funded by one of our dearest friends. We humans were slaving away all afternoon ...

to design gourmet concoctions of cilantro, parsley, and a variety of the finest lettuce available ...

to please even the most particular bunny palate. And while the volunteers exhaustedly sunk to the ground, the bunnies were happily munching away:

But despite our best efforts, there is just always SOMEONE who disapproves of SOMETHING ...

"Dude, get that camera out of my face!"

Heartland Christmas Wish List

Just in time for the holidays, our rescued shelter bunnies have compiled and presented us with a Christmas Wish List, and we need your help to fulfill some of these wishes.

Number one on their list are wooden and willow toys. Millie, for example, LOVES this wooden bridge, which is available in most pet stores.

Wuschel and Isa hope for untreated willow baskets in all shapes and sizes, so that they don't always have to share theirs with all the other bunnies.

Great wicker and willow toys are available at online stores like busybunny.com, bunnybytes.com, and rabbitstop.com, to name but a few.

We bet their management is not aware of it, but PierOne also carries a line of great bunny toys, most notably the famed wicker ball for a dollar and a
half.

So, if you shop the store for your loved ones, why not bring some Christmas joy to a bunny or two?

Specks, always the practical one, made sure that Woody Pet, the litter pellets from Atwoods, are on the Christmas list, too. Most of our litter trained bunnies place great value on us changing their litter frequently…

… which brings us to the next point on the list: litter boxes !!

Unfortunately, not every bunny has a litter box yet, which has already led to protest demonstrations (if I don't get a litter box, I’ll just use your veggie bowl!), and especially Hogan has identified a litter box as his number one wish this year.

Cuddle bunnies like Evie especially wish for gently used towels, blankets, or bedspreads to cuddle up in.

Are you still looking for a special Christmas gift for a loved one or a friend? Give the gift of a sponsorship for one of our needy bunnies. www.heartlandrabbitrescue.org/help.htm

Have you seen the wonderful bunny Christmas ornaments at the Bunny Store? For every ornament sold, the good folks donate a dollar to our Rescue. You simply need to put the name of our rescue, Heartland Rabbit Rescue, in the "Annual Holiday Fundraiser" textbox when checking out.
www.thebunnystore.com/bunnyornaments.htm

Last but definitely not least, our own wish this Christmas is that 2008 sees all of our bunnies happy and, most of all, HEALTHY. 2007 has left us with tremendous medical bills, and we are glad for any donation which allows us to build a new emergency vet fund.

We are grateful for your continued and loving support, which makes our rescue effort possible.

HAVE A BLESSED AND WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS!

Sponsor a Bunny

Make a Difference - Sponsor a Bunny!

For your gift of just around $.12 a day, $45 a year you can make a big difference in the life of one of the Heartland rabbits. Our special needs bunnies, for example, handicapped little Sprouti ...

arthritis-stricken Hazel ...

Party-Barty with his splayed hind legs ...

or Albright with a persistent eye infection ...

... can usually not be adopted out because of their illness, old age, or disability and stay at our shelter permanently. They require extra care and often expensive medical treatment; your sponsorship would help us tremendously to make their lives comfortable and enjoyable.
Of course, our healthy, adoptable bunnies would also love to be your sponsor bunny, and your gift of sponsoring will go to vet bills, food, toys, and education and adoption campaigns.

You will receive a lovely sponsorship certificate, a 5x7 inch photo, and a refrigerator magnet with your sponsor bunny's picture. On top of it, your bunny will send you a Christmas card and at least two updates on his well-being during the year of your sponsorship.

If you find it in your heart to make a bunny happy, please visit www.heartlandrabbitrescue.org/help.htm#sponsor

Sponsorships also make a wonderful gift for other bunny people!
